So here you are.
The world feels empty.
Now you're here reading this.
Perfect.
I'm glad you're here.
I know the feeling. It's a sinking feeling in your heart and mind. You have a dark intuition that the world is meaningless. You look around, and all you see is mere stuff. They're just things. And these things, they don't matter. As if matter itself doesn't matter. You look at your belongings, and you realize that, one day, they'll just turn into the dust that covers them. You look outside, and you see trees dying. You see a spider kill a fly. You wonder if you're the spider or the fly. Then a bird comes and snatches the spider. You're both. You eat things to survive until something eats you.
But you're tired of eating. Food has become a utility. You don't want to wake-up and face life. But once you're awake, you don't want to sleep, because sleep only starts the day over. The world is just full of moving things. And you're just a thing. A thing that has to move so it won't die. But moving wears you out, and you die anyway. Over and over, you lose. You try, you die, you lose. You don't know if you're working to relax or resting to work. Both have lost their meaning.
Pause.
Did I get it right? Isn't that how you feel?
Everything has lost its meaning.
Don't skip ahead.
Stay here with me.
You feel empty and meaningless.
Empty.
Meaningless.
Empty.
Meaningless.
That's how you feel, right?
Empty.
Meaningless.
But what is that feeling?
Stay with me.
Empty.
Meaningless.
What does that mean?
What does it mean to be empty?
It means there is nothing.
It means a void.
It means darkness.
It means hollow.
It means cold.
But wait.
Look around for a minute.
Do you see that?
There are a bunch of somethings all around you. A whole lot of somethings, in fact. Probably a phone, a computer. a desk, a chair, a wall, a tree, a light, a sidewalk, a sign, a car. Below you, the floor, the ground. Around you, air. The oxygen that you're breathing. Above you, the sky, and all its colors. Reach out and pick-up something small. Hold it in your hand. Feel its weight. Hold it for a while. Such a small weight begins to feel heavy. The heaviness of the world is made of lots of small, light things.
Note well: The world is not empty. It's full of stuff. And you're there, too. All that stuff was made for a reason. And so were you. Yes, that's right. You were made. At the very least, you were made by nature. Then you were made by nurture. Then you were self-made. Now you've finally arrived at the question: Why is anything made? Why is there something rather than nothing? Nobody just makes something for no reason. There's always a reason.
A reason.
Is that a thing?
Is a reason a thing?
Maybe not a thing you can touch, but it is a thing. People have lots of reasons for making things. People have lots of reasons. And those reasons came from someone else's reasons. Their reason came from someone else's reason.
So what was the first reason?
Survival?
No.
The reason for survival is life.
Then what's the reason for life?
Now we're talking about meaning.
The meaning of life must be something more than survival, because the reason for survival is life. Survival is a means to an end, which is life. If life has a meaning, then it must be more than survival.
Let me ask you: Have you ever made anything only for the reason that it would just exist? Not because it made you happy, not because it helped you survive, not because someone told you to, not because you had a sudden impulse. But have you ever made anything just so it would exist?
Probably not.
Why?
Because everything you do has meaning.
Everything you do has meaning.
You're not empty. You exist.
You're not meaningless. You have meaning.
You use meaning.
Meaning is a fill-in-the-blank, and you try putting anything and everything in that blank to see if it makes sense.
It's not that these things are meaningless.
It's that you have meaning, but you don't know what to do with it.
But you have it.
You have meaning.
I feel you resisting. I feel you struggling to agree.
Stay with me.
Why do you feel meaningless?
Because even when you do something meaningful, nobody seems to care.
And why should they?
They're doing their own meaningful things, right?
What do they need you for?
Maybe they don't.
No, really.
Maybe they don't need you.
But that doesn't mean that you are meaningless.
If they needed you for survival, or if you needed them for survival: That would be meaningless. Then you would just be food. Then you would just be a resource. Then you would just be the dirt to grow food in.
So think twice about this. You don't want people to need you. And you shouldn't want to need them. Because that doesn't help make sense of meaning at all. Survival nullifies meaning. Meaning valuates survival.
Life must mean more than survival. Otherwise, no life is worth surviving. Survival is just the money to buy the gift, but life is just the package. Inside the package is meaning.
So what is it?
What's the meaning of life?
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Breath out.
Breath in again.
Breath out.
Let's recap: The meaning of life is not that you are needed for survival, because that would be meaningless. Therefore, the meaning of life must be that you are desired.
Desired?
Who desires you?
Maybe you were an accident, conceived and born by mistake.
Well, mistakes do happen.
But think about this.
How do you know what a mistake is?
A mistake is when something happens without a reason.
But wait.
How do you know what a reason is?
If everything was a mistake, then nothing would have a reason.
But you know the difference between a mistake and a reason.
Therefore there must be a reason.
Think.
No mistake could have ever happened unless a reason happened first.
You can't make a mistake until a mistake defies reason.
There must be a reason to defy.
But what if the first reason was a mistake?
But how could that be?
An illusion doesn't work unless the illusion resembles something you already know.
Therefore reasons cannot be an illusion of mistakes.
A mistake is the absence of reason.
A reason is not the absence of a mistake.
So a reason must have come first.
There must be a reason.
And
Just as nothing ever came to exist without meaning,
And nothing with meaning is merely for survival,
And meaning means to be desired,
So your reason and meaning to exist is that you are desired.
How do you exist?
This is the mystery your emptiness feels.
Why do you exist?
This is the mystery your meaninglessness feels.
How?
Why?
What began you?
What sustains you?
Well . . .
Whatever began the world didn't need it.
Whatever began the world still has no need of it.
So whatever began the world desired the world.
Yes, it desired the world.
It must have desired the world.
It must have.
If it didn't desire the world, and all things within it, then the world would have no meaning. We should have never known what meaning meant. We should have never known a reason beyond survival. So whatever desired the world to exist must have caused the world to exist. And it must still keep the world existing.
But why?
For desire.
It desires the world.
And you are part of the world.
You are part of anti-nothing.
You are part of anti-emptiness.
Therefore the cause of the world desires you.
But where does this desire come from?
This desire cannot come from a need for survival; that would be meaningless.
But there is meaning.
Therefore, there must be more than survival.
But
What can desire something without needing it?
Look around. Find an animal. What does it desire? It desires food. It desires shelter. But it also needs those things for survival. It desires nothing that it does not need for survival. It may enjoy something it doesn't need, but there is nothing it desires that it does not need. So animals only desire what they need for survival.
You are reading this because you desire something that you do not need for survival. You could survive if you wanted to. But right now you don't want to, because you lack a reason and a meaning for survival.
Animals do not wonder whether they ought to live or die, much less why.
But that's why you're here, right?
You desire a reason and a meaning beyond survival.
All people do.
Every person does.
In fact, only people desire a reason and a meaning beyond survival.
Only a person can desire a reason and meaning beyond survival.
Only a person.
Only a person.
Only a person.
Only a person can desire something without needing it.
And if the cause of the world began the world without needing it,
Then the cause of the world desired it.
You are part of the world.
Therefore the cause of the world desired you.
But the cause of the world doesn't need you.
If it needed you, there would be no meaning.
But only a person can desire something without needing it.
The cause of the world is a person who doesn't need it.
The cause of the world is a person.
The cause of the world is a person who desires you.
And this person has power over space, time, matter, and every reason and meaning that ever existed.
Take a deep breath.
I'd like to introduce you to God:
The Person who has power over space, time, matter, and every reason and meaning that ever existed.
The Person who desires the world to exist.
The Person who desires you.
And to be desired beyond survival is the meaning of life.
God has no need of you for survival.
But He desires you.
He loves you.
God loves you.
God is the meaning of life.
Your life.
God is the meaning of your life.
He is the only thing that can fill the entire blank of meaning.
He made that blank.
You don't need meaning to survive, and that's the way God designed you.
Because God wants you to desire Him.
If you needed Him for survival, that would be meaningless.
You could survive without Him, even though He sustains your existence.
But you won't find anything that can fill that blank meaning except Him.
The One who desires you without needing you.
(And don't think that you are God.
No, you did not begin the world.
No, you did not invent reason and meaning.
You need things to survive, but God does not.)
So you must seek Him.
He desires you to seek Him.
Go to Him.
He invented reason.
You can use your reason to talk to Him.
With Him, you won't be empty, but complete.
With Him, you won't be meaningless, but fulfilled.
When you love Him like He loves you, without needing Him but desiring Him, you will be complete and fulfilled.
You are not empty and you are not meaningless.
You exist for a reason.
You are loved by God, the Person who began the entire world just to love you.
And I love you.
I didn't have to write this for my survival.
And chances are, many people love you even though they don't have to.
Isn't that beautiful?
They love you.
And I love you.
Love comes from God, and He has so much love for you.
This life is for you and Him to share in joy.
That's what He desires, to share His beauty and love with you.
Freely.
I love you because God loves you, and I love God, so I love what God loves.
Freely.
You are desired freely.
God desires you freely.
God loves you!
Take heart.
